Begum Almas Haroon, wife of Mahmoud A Haroon, ex-federal minister and former Governor of Sindh, died here, on Tuesday morning after protracted illness. She was about 83. She was laid to rest after Zohr prayers at Gizri Graveyard, said a press release.
Begum Almas is survived by her daughters Amber Haroon Saigol, Director Operations, Dawn Group of Newspapers, and sister Maimoona.
Begum Almas was born on September 22, 1922 and was educated at Lahore College for Women. She was married to Mahmoud A Haroon on July 17, 1946.
Begum Almas was by nature a modest lady and a social worker and would be remembered for exemplary services, which she rendered at Lahore's Walton Camp, where millions of refugees poured in from riot-torn India at the time of Independence.
In particular, she looked after the children, who were orphaned or whose parents and near relatives were lost.
Later, she remained associated with St John's Ambulance Karachi.-PR
