A politician known for supporting the fight against al Qaeda-linked militants was gunned down, with two others, in South Waziristan, witnesses said on Sunday. Unidentified gunmen opened fire at the vehicle of Faridullah Khan, chief of Ahmedzai Wazir tribe, near Jandola.
Farid and two others travelling with him were killed in an attack launched from two cars coming from the opposite direction, witnesses said. Two more people travelling in his vehicle were wounded, they added. Farid's driver, Habib Shah, who was also hurt in the attack, told AFP that the Khan was returning from a meeting with military commanders.
"When we reached near Jandola, two cars came from opposite direction and opened fire at us. We also returned the fire but they fled," Habib said.
