The Rangers will continue to run hydrants because Karachi Water & Sewerage Board (KWSB) could not take over these hydrants owing to certain technical difficulties. This was announced at a joint press conference by KWSB Managing Director, Brigadier Iftikhar Hyder and Colonel Mohammad Zafar Iqbal Awan, spokesman of Pakistan Rangers, here on Thursday. It was said that the Rangers have been running nine hydrants successfully from 1999. In October 2004, Rangers requested Sindh government to return the hydrants' functioning back to the KW&SB. A meeting in this regard was held at the office of the Chief Secretary and it was decided to assign back the services to the KWSB.
For proper handover various meetings were held between City Nazim Naimatullah Khan, Managing Director KWSB and other concerned officials with the Pakistan Rangers in order to provide efficient water tanker-supply services to the consumers.
Meanwhile, Rangers requested the CDGK that some changes should be made in hand-over sequence ie first Muslimabad and LSR hydrants should be handed over to the KW&SB.
The KWSB decided that after the take-over these two hydrants would be closed down as the board could not operate it efficiently.
Keeping in view the difficulties to be faced by people the Rangers called a high-level meeting regarding the said decisions of the KWSB, and it was decided these hydrants would remain under the control of the Rangers; only LSR hydrant would be closed down and those areas where water was being supplied through LSR should be distributed to other hydrants.
It was also decided that the LSR hydrant would be shut systematically and Rangers will take action against those responsible for creating water shortage. The decision was also taken that owing to high temperature the duration of water supply from the hydrants would be increased.
