The Revenue receipts of Pakistan Railway are higher than targets by Rs 1083.583 million, during the second quarter (October-December 2004-05. This includes an increase of Rs 318.511 million earning from passengers mainly because of increase in fare @ Rs 0.062/per kilometer per passenger and an increase in sundry earnings of Rs 827.744 million due to accelerated recovery of receivables. According to an official review, the number of passengers increased by 4.1 million but number of kilometers travelled and average kilometer per passenger decreased by 151.250 million and 70.20 km, respectively.
According to statistics of cargo handling of Pakistan Railways, the number of tons carried increased by 0.11 million. However, number of kilometer travelled and average kilometer per ton decreased by 70.34 million and 102.720 k.m, respectively. Receipts from goods transportation, other coaching and military traffic decreased by Rs 39.102 million, Rs 10.533 million, and Rs 12.327 million, respectively. This is inspite of increase in freight charges @ 0.014 /per kilometer per ton.
Revenue expenditure of Pakistan Railway is less than the targets by Rs 439.417 million due to less than the projected operating expenses and less pension payments. Saving in payment of pension will, however, be off set in the coming months because it is being paid after 3-4 months.
Actual deficit decreased by Rs 1523.00 million due to increase in operating revenue (Rs 1084.00 million) and decrease in expenditure (Rs 439.00 million).
