Chief Justice Lahore High Court (LHC), Justice Iftikhar Hussain Chaudhry has reserved verdict in a petition against the decision of provincial government declaring wearing of helmet by the motorcyclists compulsory. Earlier, petitioner a member of the Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA), M D Tahir contended before the court that the respondent government officials had taken this decision only to oblige some of their favourites engaged in the business of helmet manufacturing.
He contended that the respondent traffic police officials instead of performing their basic duties were harassing and imposing fine on those motorcyclists who were not wearing helmets.
He said that the respondent traffic police officials had failed to check the traffic rules violations. He prayed to the court to declare the decision of wearing of helmet as illegal, unconstitutional and without lawful authority.
The court, after hearing the petitioner at length, reserved its verdict. The court, however, observed that some directions would be passed on to the respondent government in this regard.
