The National Assembly Standing Committee on Law, Justice and Human Rights has approved the Political Parties Order-2002 Amendment Bill. The government is now likely to get approval of the bill from both the houses of the parliament on Monday, sources told Business Recorder here on Saturday.
The bill, aiming at empowering a person to hold a public as well as a political party's office simultaneously, was referred to the committee on Friday, immediately after it was moved into the National Assembly.
The standing committee, which met under the chairmanship of Rai Mansab Ali Khan, approved the bill with majority rejecting the reservations of its members, belonging to opposition groups.
"The committee thoroughly examined the bill and approved it wholly as it was introduced in the Lower House," said a statement issued here from National Assembly Secretariat.
MNAs Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan, Mehreen Anwar Raja and Muhammad Usman Advocate, however, had certain reservations on the bill, the statement added.
Representing ruling coalition, Nawab Mirza Advocate, Zahid Hamid and Dr Sher Afgan Khan Niazi defended the bill, saying there was no constitutional bar on the parliament to approve it.
Taking into consideration the routine business, the committee also emphasised the importance of human rights and the broader functioning of the standing committee.
The members also proposed that the committee should be empowered to summon victims of human rights violation along with the representatives of concerned authorities.
The meeting also stressed the need for taking note of human rights violations and emphasised that a mechanism should be evolved for the prevention of these violations.
The Members recommended the formation of sub-committees on human rights.
