The overall manufacturing sector registered a 'stellar' growth of 13.4 percent in the outgoing fiscal, with automobiles being important contributor which registered an increase of 52.7 percent over last fiscal year, according to 'Economic Survey of Pakistan 2003-04'.
Large-scale manufacturing, which accounted for 65.5 percent of overall manufacturing, registered a growth of 17.1 percent in the current fiscal year, against the target of 8.8 percent, in comparison with 7.2 percent in last year, the Survey said.
The number of refrigerators jumped up from 252,900 in last year to 426,900 in the current year, showing an increase of 68.8 percent.
Ample liquidity in the banking system, highly investment-friendly interest rate and environment, stable exchange rate, low inflation, comfortable foreign exchange reserves and stronger domestic demand for consumer goods were termed as basic factors that considerably contributed to higher industrial output.
The manufactured goods which registered negative growth included motor tubes whose production decreased by 10 percent, buses two percent, wheat threshers 21.1 percent, and electric motors 10.6 percent. The number of TV sets also decreased from 603,900 last year to 581,500 this year.
The overall growth rate in the food, beverages and tobacco group was up by 13.7 percent; textiles and apparel group 7 percent; paper and board 7.9 percent; pharmaceuticals 21.1 percent; and electricals 45.8 percent.
The items which registered positive growth in the textile group were cotton cloth 15.6 percent and cotton yarn 1.9 percent.
The production of vegetable ghee was up by 13.6 percent, cooking oil 22.9 percent, sugar 14.8 percent in the food, beverages and tobacco group. Nitrogen fertiliser 3.3 percent and soda ash 3.1 percent were the increases in the chemical group output.
Cotton yarn was up from 1,429,100 tons in 2002-03 to 1,456,400 tons in the current year with overall increase of 1.91 percent. Cotton cloth output increased from 419.9 million square metres in last year to 485.4 million square metres this year.
Sugar production increased from 3,263,900 tons last year to 3,746,900 tons this year, showing an in crease of 14.8 percent. The nitrogenous fertiliser production increased to 1,681,100 tons this year against 1,627,300 tons of last year while the phosphatic fertilisers output increased from 81,800 tons of 2002-03 to 177,800 tons in the outgoing year.
Vegetable ghee was up from 570,100 tons last year to 647,800 tons this year. Cooking oil production was 124,900 tons this year against 101,700 tons last year. Cement production for this fiscal year was 9272000 tons in comparison with 8153000 tons last year.
Cigarettes production remained at 39.8 billion numbers this fiscal year against 36.2 billion in last fiscal year. Jeep and cars number jumped up to 69802 this year from 42691 in 2002-03.
The number of tractors increased from 17860 last year to 25435 this year. Light commercial vehicles number jumped from 8727 in last fiscal year to 9219 this year.
Motorcycles/scooters number was up from 125675 last year to 214932 this year. The number of bicycles manufactured during 2003-04 was 481,800 against 465,600 in last fiscal year. The number of motor tyres was up from 779,000 in last year to 926,000 this year.
