Standing Committee of the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) on Customs, Tariff, Import and Valuation has called upon the government not to allow import of second-hand cars, rather it should reduce import duty on new cars.
LCCI Committee for Customs, Tariff, Valuation and Imports Chairman Irfan Qaiser stated this here on Thursday. He said the committee has also urged the government to intervene and investigate the root causes and reasons why such a non-consumer friendly situation exists with relation to deliveries of vehicles in Pakistan.
The committee made these observations at a recently held meeting, which was chaired by Qaiser. Committee Co-Convenor Tahir Javed Malik and other members also attended it.
Irfan Qaiser said that the automobile industry and its vendors had made a lot of progress in the recent past. Two years back the production of automobiles was around 45,000, which hopefully would touch the figure of 100,000 units this year.
It showed that the industry was booming, not only this but the vendors was also preparing to jump into the field of exports of auto-parts and upgrading their technologies, he added.
He was of the view that permission to import used cars might hurt the flourishing industrial sector and could aggravate unemployment problem. He said that import of used cars could also result in bringing junk to the country in the name of cars, which might not be environment friendly too.
