China to curb on government car use

China plans to clamp down on corruption among its communist party ranks by curbing the use of government-owned cars for private purposes, state press reported Monday.
Eastern Wuxi and south-western Chengdu cities are spearheading what could be turned into a nation-wide plan to cut costs and prevent abuse of party membership perks, the Xinhua news agency said.
The agency said the government was leaning toward selling the majority of state cars and paying monthly transportation subsidies from the proceeds as has been done in one Wuxi city district.
In Chengdu, the government has banned the procurement of foreign-made cars and instructed that at the county level each car shall be shared by 15 officials.
