The Central Board of Revenue (CBR) has allowed tax-free import of German-made compressed natural gas (CNG) compressors to popularise the use of environment-friendly motor vehicle fuel.
The CBR has included "Bauer Compressors Germany" in the list of concessional items through an amendment in the SRO 38 (I)/98 issued here on Thursday.
The SRO 38 (I)/98 contains the list of different types of CNG kits, cylinders, machinery and compressors for the purpose of tax-free import.
Presently, the exemption would be available on CNG kits and cylinders up to June 30, 2004 as per the conditions laid down in the amended SRO 38 (I)/98, whereas the CNG machinery and compressors were liable to 5 percent custom duty from November 1, 2002 to June 30, 2004 and these items would remain exempted from the payment of sales tax.
The CBR has made amendments in the Table-I of the SRO 38 (I)/98 for notifying concession.
Sources said that the government was making serious efforts to promote CNG culture by setting up new CNG stations to generate employment.
Following is the text of the SRO issued here on Thursday:
"In exercise of the powers conferred by section 19 of the Customs Act, 1969 (IV of 1969), and clause (a) of sub-section (2) of section 13 of the Sales Tax Act, 1990, the Federal Government is pleased to direct that the following amendment shall be made in its notification SRO 38 (I)/98, dated January 21, 1998, namely:-
"In the aforesaid notification, in Table-I, after Sr. No. 52 in column (1) and entries relating thereto in columns (2) and (3), the following new serial number and entries relating thereto shall be added, namely:
"53. Bauer Compressors C 15.1-13", Germany.
