A 37 year-old United States citizen was Thursday charged with murdering an unarmed British policeman on duty in northern England last week, police said.
Nathan Wayne Coleman, until recently a night-club doorman in northern England, was charged with the murder of traffic policeman Ian Broadhurst and attempted murder of two other officers, police said.
Coleman was tracked down Wednesday at a hotel in the northern town of Gateshead after a massive four-day manhunt. He was taken for questioning to the city of Leeds, where the murder occurred the day after Christmas.
A police spokesman said: "A man in his 30s will be appearing at Leeds Magistrates Court at 9.30am on Thursday, January 1 in connection with charges of the murder of PC (Police constable) Ian Broadhurst and the attempted murder of PCs Neil Roper and James Banks."
Broadhurst, 34, who wasn't carrying a gun, was killed when he and his colleagues discovered a stolen BMW car while on routine patrol.
The driver of the BMW whipped out a gun as he was about to be handcuffed by the officer in the rear of a patrol car. The man fired several times, killing Broadhurst and hitting Roper, who remains in hospital with gunshot wounds.
