imageGetting to a gym and hitting weights, is a popular means for people looking to keep themselves fit and their bodies in a top shape.

However, most people are not aware that working out at a gym exposes them to a list of harmful bacteria, which are found on the gym equipments says a study. According to Daily Mail, the research conducted by FitRated, a company that reviews fitness equipment has discovered that gyms are a "hotspot for germs".

The researchers gathered bacteria samples from 27 different pieces of equipment at three different gyms, taking samples from treadmill, exercise bike, or free weight. The study found that these equipments are filled with germs i.e. more than 1 million per square inch apiece.

The study suggests that the result is simply due to the large number of people who touch these equipments, everyday.

As per the research, free weights, for example had 362 times more bacteria than a toilet seat, with 41 percent of that overall bacteria noted as Gram-positive cocci, the type of bacteria that can cause skin infections, pneumonia or septicemia, which means that they are not spotless after all.

Whereas, the treadmill had 74 times more bacteria than a water faucet, and the exercise bike was 39 times more likely to give you some icky bacteria than a reusable cafeteria tray.

So, what to do? skip gym, well the study also gave some useful tips to have a proper and healthy workout i.e. Be sure to disinfect machines both before and after you use them, don’t touch your face, never walk around barefoot and always wash your hands and change your gym clothes immediately after a workout.
