imageISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Water and Power came under fire on Thursday from members of treasury benches in Senate for incorrect and over-billing in Balochistan.

The Senators were speaking on an Adjournment Motion moved by Senators Shahi Syed and Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed regarding report of NEPRA for the year 2014-15 wherein it has been revealed that the efficiency of the Ministry of Water and Power is very poor and 70 percent consumers are getting incorrect bills.

Taking part in the debate Senator Usman Kakar of Pakhtunkhwa Mili Awami Party alleged that the employees of WAPDA and some other departments are involved in electricity theft and line losses but the burden is passed on to the poor consumers in shape of incorrect and over-billing.

He said electricity tariff is increasing day by day and it is not even possible for a common man to bear the burden of inflated electricity bills.

Usman Kakar demanded that a special committee of the Senate be formed to ascertain the situation and action must be taken against those WAPDA employees who are involved in it.

Sanator Sardar Azam Musakhel was of the view that the burden of electricity theft of big fishes are being put on poor consumers. He said they had submitted development funds to WAPDA for electrification of new areas in Balochistan but the people of far-flung areas of the province are still deprived of electricity in this modern era.

Senator Mir Kabir said that 95 percent incorrect bills are being sent to the consumers in Balochistan which were badly affecting the domestic consumers and agriculture tube-wells.

Later, Chairman Senate said that debate on this adjournment motion will be carried out on Friday (Oct.9) as members of the opposition benches were not present in the House due to their walkout.
