imageBERLIN: The German Football League (DFL) on Thursday posted record sale returns for the tenth year in a row, having made 2.45 billion euros ($2.84 billion) for the 2013/14 Bundesliga season.

The figures are 12 percent up compared to the previous season as Germany's second division also posted record returns of 458 million euros, up nearly 10 percent on the previous year.

"In recent years, German football has used its strong financial base to achieve exceptional results. And the future looks positive for continued economic growth," said DFL CEO Christian Seifert.

Germany's top flight continues to boast the highest attendance figures in Europe with an average of 42,609 fans watching every Bundesliga match -- which equates to 90 percent capacity.

With average crowds of 17,853, Germany's second division is ranked seventh of Europe's top leagues where an average of 36,631 fans attend games in England, 26,843 in Spain and 23,385 in Italy.

Of the 18 clubs in Germany's top flight, 13 posted positive returns, one more than the previous season, while player salaries reached 900 million euros, up from 847 million the year before.
