imageISLAMABAD: The Hydrocarbon Development Institute of Pakistan's (HDIP) campaign to verify fitness of CNG vehicles is moving at a very slow pace, verifying only 15,000 vehicles so far, across the country.

"People frequently verified their vehicle's fitness and due to strict measures adopted by the authorities after cylinder blast incidents, the number of verified vehicles grew; but now things are moving at a snail's pace," an official of the HDIP told APP on Tuesday.

The official said that people in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and Sindh were showing laxity in getting their vehicles verified, due to the lenient approach of the traffic police.

HDIP Officer In-charge Rao Abdul Rehman said that the vehicles were put to verification process at specific workshops; while those which did not qualify were given a grace period.

Answering a question, he said that 112 workshops are working throughout the country to check the fitness of 3.5 million public and private CNG vehicles, which are then issued a fitness sticker that is valid for one year.

Regarding the verification process in the federal capital, he said the first verification sticker was issued on June 5 and around 30-40 CNG vehicles visit on a daily basis, but only 10 to 15 vehicles qualify for the fitness token.

He said the residents of Islamabad can get their vehicles checked at the HDIP CNG Station at F7/4.

After checking a vehicle, a sticker is issued, which is valid for one year.

He said the details of the vehicles could be verified by sending the code on the sticker through SMS to 8028.

The checking fee was Rs 1,000 per vehicle, which was valid for one year.

All the relevant departments, including the traffic police, were also actively participating to ensure verification of the CNG vehicles, he added.

He also appealed to the media to play a proactive role in creating awareness among masses to test fitness of their vehicles for their own safety.

According to details, the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration has been ordered to strictly ensure rules and regulations regarding use of CNG kits in vehicles, particularly those carrying children, and the Islamabad traffic police are issuing tickets to vehicles for using poor quality CNG kits.

The decision was made in a meeting of the Islamabad deputy commissioner with the representatives of Hydro Carbon Development Institute, CNG associations and Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP).

It was also decided that vehicles will also be checked at the CNG stations apart from checks conducted by ITP and Islamabad police.
