Prices of important kitchen items, including vegetables, pulses, sugar, chicken, eggs, have marginally increased, according to a survey conducted by the Business Recorder here on Sunday.
The survey noticed an upward trend in prices of items of daily consumption. The consumers in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's provincial capital Peshawar were criticising the local authorities for not taking any concrete step to control the 'price-hike' in local market.
Five kilograms of tomato are being sold at Rs 200 as compared to Rs 170 during the preceding week, while five kg onions are priced Rs 100 in retail market. Garlic remains costlier in local market where its two qualities are available at Rs 270 and Rs 300 per kilogram, respectively.
Similarly, red potato is being sold at Rs 60 per kilogram, while white potato at Rs 40/kg. One kilogram peas are being sold at Rs 260, while arvi remains available at Rs 70/kg. Rupees 40 is per kilogram price of cucumber, cauliflower is being sold at Rs 40 per kilogram, cabbage at Rs 60 per kg, turnip at Rs 40 per kg and ladyfinger at Rs 70 per kg. Capsicum remains available at Rs 150 per kilogram, while calabash at Rs 50 per kilogram.
Price of sugar has recorded rupees three increase from Rs 72 to Rs 75/kg in retail market. Local shopkeepers said that the price of sugar was increasing gradually in wholesale market that had great impact on retail rate, due to which poverty-stricken consumers suffered the most.
Similarly, the demand of chicken meat and eggs also rose amid increasing chill weather. One-dozen eggs is being sold at Rs 130, as compared to Rs 90 and Rs 100 per dozen during preceding week. The chicken rate has also soared considerably in local market as chicken meat available at Rs 260 per kilogram. There is also per piece system of price under which a big chicken is being sold at Rs 300 and Rs 320 while small-size chicken being sold at Rs 250 and Rs 260 in retail market.
The survey witnessed the price of cow meat continued to remain unchecked as authorities miserably failed to take action against butchers fleecing consumers by overcharging high rates of meat in local market. Per kilogram price of cow meat is Rs 340 against the official price of Rs 240/kh. The buyers have complained that the authorities are reluctant to take action against the butchers for selling meat on desired rates in local market. Likewise, mutton is being sold at Rs 600 and Rs 650 per kilogram.
The survey also noticed unchanged prices of pulses as compared to previous week. One kilogram white gram flour (baisen) being available at Rs 140/kg. Big kabali chana priced at Rs 170/kg in market.
