Sindh Excise and Taxation Department has recovered Rs 11.2 billion against the target of Rs 41.7 billion during the first quarter of the current fiscal year. This was stated by Excise and Taxation Minister Gianchand Israni during a meeting with Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah at the Chief Minister's House on Thursday. The minister briefed the CM about the performance of his department.
Giving details of yearly targets and quarterly recoveries, Gianchand said that the department had collected Rs 1.2 billion under Motor Vehicle Tax against the target of Rs 5.5 billion; the Excise Enactment recovery stood at Rs 786 million against the target of Rs 4.8 billion; Infrastructure Cess recovery stood at Rs 7.2 billion against Rs 28 billion target; cotton at Rs 35.7 million against Rs 500 million target; professional tax at Rs 133.9 million against Rs 410 million target; property tax at Rs 784.8 million against the target of Rs 2.44 billion and entertainment duty recovery stood at Rs 13.4 million against the target of Rs 100 million.
Expressing his dissatisfaction over the recovery under property tax, the chief minister asked the department to conduct a fresh survey of property units because the last survey was conducted in 2001. "There is a huge potential to enhance collection under property tax. The tax recovery system must be computerised right from assessment to recovery," Qaim said.
Senior Minister for Finance and Energy Syed Murad Ali Shah, Excise & Taxation Minister Gianchand Israni, Chief Secretary Siddique Memon and other officials were also present in the meeting. DG Excise and Taxation Shabir Shaikh said that from January to the current month, the Excise Department had recovered 7,000kg of charas, 9kg opium, 4,125kg bhang and 96 bottles of foreign liquor. "We have registered 57 cases and arrested 63 persons," he added.
The Excise and Taxation Minister said that there were eight check posts of the department at different locations. The chief minister directed the department to purchase latest detecting gadgets for checking on the highways. The chief minister also directed the chief secretary to personally monitor the court cases of the excise department.
