The Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) sector leader has accused the Federal Bureau Revenue (FBR) of illegally collecting enhanced sales and income taxes from the sector. Central leader Ghiyas Abdullah Paracha on Tuesday claimed that the illegal collection of taxes from his sector could compromise its ability of operate and serve the public and that delay in resolution of the issue of tax would increase problems for all stakeholders. "It must be resolved on preference," he added.
He said the Supreme Court had told the government to slash the 26 percent sales tax on the sector to 17 percent which was hardly followed. He claimed that a deceptive formula was instead introduced which showed the sales tax at 17 percent, but its impact on CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) operators is hardly less than 32 percent. "Some sectors have been exempted from taxes while others are getting relaxations. "The CNG sector that pays taxes in advance is being pushed to the wall," he said. "The CNG sector wants to pay taxes the way other sectors are paying it which will bring discrimination to an end. Delay in resolution of the issue will further complicate matters for all stakeholders."
