Google is gearing up to bring its Project ‘Loon’ in practical phase as it plans to release internet balloons all over U.S. The balloons which were reported to being produced in a secretive lab are thought of as a new step by Google to provide internet access to customers over a large area.
Project Loon is a network of balloons traveling on the edge of space, designed to connect people in rural and remote areas, help fill coverage gaps, and bring people back online.
Business Insider reported that the company has asked the Federal Communications Commission for a license to test experimental radios that use wireless spectrum in the millimeter bandwidth in all 50 states and Puerto Rico. Google said it wants to begin the tests on January 1 for a period of 24 months.
These balloons are planned for under developed countries and perhaps Google is testing them in U.S to make the technology perfect before carrying out world-wide operations. Google has announced its plans to work with top telecoms in Indonesia as a way launching ‘Loon’ in Asia.
Google is also developing ‘internet drones’ to enhance air to ground communication by providing internet access. Business Insider also reported that Google’s rival Facebook is also carrying out methods to provide internet access by developing ‘internet drones’.
