Shallow quake jolts Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES: A shallow 3.5-magnitude earthquake rattled the Los Angeles area on Sunday, causing panic but no initial reports of damage or injuries.

The quake hit at 9:17 pm (0417 GMT Monday) at a depth of 10 kilometers (six miles), the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

Its epicenter was only a kilometer from the View Park-Windsor Hills neighborhood, which is just outside the city, USGS said.

Los Angeles Fire Department activated its emergency earthquake mode, saying on Twitter: "Firefighters assessing response area. No damage reported at this time."

The quake was trending on Twitter, with many users saying their homes shuddered but others not even feeling it.
