ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Wednesday disqualified Punjab Prisons Minister Chaudhry Abdul Waheed Arain for holding two national identity cards while terming it a violation of articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution.
The three-member bench of the apex court headed by Justice Mian Saqib Nisar comprising Justice Sh. Azmat Saeed and Justice Mushir Alam resumed hearing of the petition filed by Ch. Abdul Waheed Arain against Election Tribunal's decision over his disqualification for holding two CNICs.
The bench dismissed the provincial minister's appeal and maintained the Election Tribunal's order.
A petition was filed by Rana Abdul Jabbar of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) in June 2013 before the ET, alleging that Ch. Waheed Arain had concealed the facts before the returning officer while election rigging was also done for his victory.
The petition had stated that Arain was using two national identity cards - one for official documents and parliamentary affairs and the other for paperwork regarding his property, banks accounts and business deals. The ET had disqualified Arain on February 5.
In 2013 general elections Chaudhry Waheed candidate of Pakistan Muslim League-N had got 33,030 votes and his competitor a candidate of PTI, Rana Abdul Jabbar, got 28,826 votes from PP-192 Multan constituency.
