ISLAMABAD: The Senate will hold a three-day conference of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) starting from December 1 in Lahore with the theme - Quest for Asian Parliament in 'Asian Century.'
Chairman Senate Syed Nayyer Hussain Bokhari has constituted the APA Organizing Committee, under the chairmanship of Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed, to make the programme and make other arrangements regarding the session.
The committee held its first meeting on Friday and reviewed arrangements including logistics related matters of the conference, said a press release issued here.
The APA included parliaments from all Asian countries as well as a number of international observer organizations. This will be the second APA conference to be held in Pakistan, the first one was held in December last year in Islamabad where the APA elected the Chairman Senate Syed Nayyer Hussain Bokhari as its President.
The international parliamentary conference will include plenary sessions, meetings of Standing Committees devoted to political, economic, cultural and social affairs besides a special meeting of women parliamentarians of the APA. The conference will conclude with the adoption of Lahore Declaration.
The organizing committee decided to extend special invitation to the founder of the APA former Speaker of the Philippines Jose de Venecia Jr. to deliver a keynote speech at the inaugural session in Lahore.
The APA foundation was laid in October 2004 in Islamabad at the conference of the Association of Asian Parliament for Peace (AAPP).
Now, the APA is actively seeking to transform itself into an Asian Parliament representing the will of the elected representatives of the world's biggest continent - Asia.
The meeting decided that the Organizing Committee would give a briefing to Ambassadors of Asian countries at the Parliament on November 24.
Mushahid announced that next meeting of the committee would be held on November 18 at the Parliament House.
