(Karachi) Sindh Education Minister Saeed Ghani has said that schools in the province will not reopen from June 1 due to the coronavirus crisis.

Addressing a media briefing in Karachi on Tuesday, he said that the decision has been taken keeping in view the current coronavirus situation in the country. "The new date will be announced later after consultation," he said.

He pointed out that students from class 1 to 8 will be promoted based on their previous performances while those in secondary classes will not be promoted due to complications.

He said the federal government's decision to promote students of Grades 9 to 12 had some complications, which were also acknowledged by the Centre.

He mentioned the law pertaining to board exams do not allow the promotion of students who have not appeared. "In order to do so, the law will have to be amended," the education minister said.

Ghani said that a committee has been formed to ponder over the issue and its recommendations will be passed on to the federal government.

He said that it is uncertain when the ongoing crisis will be over. "Education cannot be suspended indefinitely and it is important to come up with an alternative system."

The minister said that government schools and colleges do not have the facility to give online classes.
