The Supreme Court has directed Federal Board Revenue (FBR) to complete inquiry against Deputy Commissioner Inland Revenue Abdul Hameed Anjum within three months regarding alleged refund of vouchers to some companies illegally.

A three-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed, on Wednesday heard the FBR's appeal against Federal Service Tribunal's verdict, which had acquitted its official allegedly involved in allowing refund of vouchers worth of Rs 87 million to three companies in Karachi.

Chairman Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Shabbar Zaidi in compliance with court's order appeared before the bench. The FBR counsel informed the bench that the report has been submitted.

The court had ordered the FBR to probe against Ashfaq Ali Tuneuo, BPS-21 officer of Inland Revenue Service (IRS), and Deputy Commissioner Abdul Hameed Anjum.

The FBR lawyer informed the bench that the department has taken action against Ashfaq Ali Tuneuo. The bench questioned how the FBR could clear one of its officers and punish other in the same case. The Chief Justice questioned why the FBR can't take action against its officer involved in illegal practice.

The Chief Justice questioned about the steps taken by the department for the recovery of Rs 874.7 million public funds, asking how the amount would be recovered.

The chairman FBR replied that the measures have been taken for the recovery of this amount. The Chief Justice inquired "how without record the recovery could be made".

The FBR submitted a report regarding illegal refund.

The FBR had removed Abdul Hameed Anjum for allegedly being involved in allowing refund of vouchers worth Rs 87 million to three companies in Karachi. He had challenged his removal before the Federal Service Tribunal (FST) which acquitted him of the charges with the ruling that no evidence was found against the petitioner to support the allegations.

Similarly, two other officials including Ashfaq Ali Tuneuo, Officer Inland Revenue Service (IRS), FBR Karachi, and Ameerul Haq, Senior Auditor, allegedly involved in the matter, had also moved the Federal Service Tribunal, and the tribunal had remanded their cases to the FBR with the direction to decide departmental appeal of both the officials. The bench after hearing the arguments disposed of the case.
