Royal Dutch Shell Plc said a fire at a unit at its 156,400 barrel per day Martinez, California, refinery was extinguished around 9:05 a.m. local time on Friday.
According to a Martinez refinery filing with state pollution regulators, a pump fire resulted in flaring Friday morning.
"No employees or contractors were injured," Shell said in an email.
A unit upset incident occurred Friday morning at the refinery, Shell added, without clarifying whether it was linked to the fire.
No units were deployed from the fire department as the refinery did not require assistance, the Contra Costa County Fire Department said.
