lahore-high-courtRECORDER REPORT

LAHORE: Lahore High Court Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial here on Friday suspended the assembly membership of PML-N minority MPA Rana Asif Mahmood.

The CJ issued this order during the course of proceedings of a petition against dual nationality of Rana Asif.

Earlier, the counsel for Rana Asif admitted that his client had taken oath for citizenship and had also gotten a citizenship certificate from Canada. The CJ adjourned the further hearing to Oct 12, saying that apparently his disqualification had been proven.

The court however observed that the respondent was given the last chance to apprise the court about any law in his defence.

As proceedings began, Saiful Mulook, the counsel for petitioner Ilyas Siddique, contended that the SC had already suspended the membership of many parliamentarians on dual nationality grounds, therefore, the assembly membership of the respondent should also be suspended.
