(Karachi) Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Gulzar Ahmed has taken first ever suo moto notice relating to lack of facilities in hospitals to deal with the coronavirus outbreak after assuming charge as chief of the top court.

As per media reports, the chief justice has constituted a five-member bench and fixed the date of April 13 to commence hearing in the matter. Justice Gulzar also sought details of facilities in medical institutions and hospitals regarding coronavirus.

The CJ has issued notices to attorney general, health secretary and interior secretary. Besides, the chief justice also summoned all the chief secretaries and advocate generals of the four provinces.

Earlier during proceedings of a case, the Supreme Court questioned the inadequate preventive measures taken by the government to deal with the coronavirus and observed that the epidemic had invaded Pakistan due its incompetence.

Justice Gulzar Ahmed observed that the government had not taken effective preventive measures for dealing with the COVID-19.

Criticizing the inadequate steps of the government on the issue, the chief justice observed that the epidemic came to Pakistan due to the incompetence of the government, as no effective preventive measures had been taken to check the affected persons on airports and in border areas.

“If concrete measures are not taken pertaining to security, more and more diseases may land in the country. Look at the worst conditions at the quarantine facilities,” the CJP said.
