UNITED NATIONS: Libya has moved to seek a change in the credentials for the Libyan permanent representative to the United Nations (UN), a spokesman said.

UN spokesman Martin Nesirky confirmed that "the secretary-general has received correspondence from the Libyan authorities, naming Ali Abdussalam Treki as their designated permanent representative."

Treki, who served as the President of the UN General Assembly in its last session, has been presented as Libya's choice for the main ambassador of the nation to the world body during a time of conflict in the North African country.

Protests across Libya against the regime of Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi prompted the previous officials at the country's mission's to the UN to defect from the Libyan regime.

"The United Nations has also received an earlier letter withdrawing the credentials of Permanent Representative Mohammed Shalgham and Deputy Permanent Representative Ibrahim Dabbashi," Nesirky said. "That letter is also being studied."

Nesirky clarified that as a UN member state, Libya has control over its UN representation. He added that he is "unaware of any contacts" between Treki and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon since Treki's term as General Assembly president ended.
