Suzuki Alto loses shimmer as auto sales fell by 48pc

• Toyota Corolla was the volume leader in 1300cc and above category with 3,445 units sold in the month of January.
• The sales of Suzuki Alto took a hit after the only star of auto sector managed to sell 1,794 units only last month.

Dismal show by the auto sector continued after car sales in the first month of 2020 stood at 10,095 units, showing a 48 percent sales decline as compared to 19,353 units sold in the same period last year. 

As per the data released by Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA), the country’s auto sector remained sluggish marred with weak demand and high cost.

In the 1300cc and above category, 5,467 units were sold in the month of January 2020, as compared to 9,750 units sold in January last year. However, calculating on month-on-month basis the sales saw an uptick by over 68pc, as only 3,246 units were sold in December 2019.

Toyota Corolla was the volume leader in 1300cc and above category with 3,445 units sold in the month of January, as compared to 2,085 units sold in December. Honda (City and Civic) followed with 1,878 units sold in January 2020, as compared to 884 units sold in preceding month.

In 1000CC category, Suzuki Cultus managed to sell 1,701 units in January, as compared to 2,185 units sold in the same period last year. However, Cultus sales grew on month-on-month basis by over 85pc. Meanwhile, Suzuki WagonR sold 567 units in January 2020, but only 145 units of the car were produced in the period as well.

Coming to below 1000cc category, the sales of Suzuki Alto took a hit after the only star of auto sector managed to sell 1,794 units last month, as compared to 3,700 units sold in December 2019, showing a sales plunge by over 50pc.
