Mayor Karachi Wasim Akhtar on Friday directed the concerned officials of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to expedite remaining development works of the Sports Complex, so that new sports facilities including cricket, hockey ground and badminton and table tennis arena could be made available for the sports lovers.

Presiding a meeting of the technical services, finance and sports and recreation department in his office, Mayor said finishing all ongoing uplift schemes and make these operational was the top priority; KMC wants to open maximum sports facilities to public as soon as possible.

Deputy Mayor Syed Arshad Hasan, Chairman Works Committee Hasan Naqvi, Financial Advisor Riaz Khatri, Director General Technical Works Iqtidar Ahmed, Senior Director Coordination Masood Alam, Director Sports Culture Khursheed and others also attended the meeting.

Earlier the mayor was given a detailed briefing on the ongoing development works of the sports complex. It was informed that work presently going on a portion of 4 acres land of the complex. The phase-I began in 2013 of which 95 percent work has already been completed and the remaining is underway speedily.

The complex offers sports facilities for cricket, hockey, football, roller skating, badminton, table tennis, squash, bowling alley and other indoor sports, with swimming, jogging track.

With a capacity for 3000 spectators, a hockey ground is being developed and the work is at the final stage.

Mayor said that civil and electrical works should be carried out simultaneously to remove any hurdle on later stages.

He also said that sports complex and grounds could only be used for sport activities and no commercial activity be allowed there. We want to complete the development works of Landhi sports complex at the earliest so these could be opened for people soon, Wasim concluded.
