‘Our watch has ended’: Game of Thrones ends with a bittersweet finale

After 73 episodes over the period of eight years, one of the most watched TV series ‘Game of Thrones’ has come to it

After 73 episodes over the period of eight years, one of the most watched TV series ‘Game of Thrones’ has come to its end. The last episode was aired on Sunday and just as makers once promised, the ending was certainly bittersweet.

The finale of GoT eighth season saw Jon Snow kill Daenerys Targaryen to keep yet another tyrant from sitting on the Iron Throne. After mother of dragons got killed, Drogon melted the Iron Throne, as if even he acknowledged that it was the lust for power that led his mother to her demise. As a punishment demanded by Unsullied, Jon is sent to become a part of Night's Watch from where he then leaves Castle Black once again to lead an expedition beyond the Wall alongside Tormund, Ghost and a group of Wildlings.

Bran the Broken, First of his Name, is announced King of the Andals and of the First Men, Lord of the Six Kingdoms and Protector of the Realm. Sansa Stark, the Lady of Winterfell demanded northern independence from her new king, Bran, who gave it to her. In the final moments, she was crowned as the new queen in north, as Northerners raised their swords and shouted ‘the Queen in the North’.

Arya Stark apparently has no intention of ever returning to Winterfell. Instead, the youngest Stark sister set out on her own to discover what was west of Westeros. In the final moments of the episode, she was seen on a ship bearing the Stark sigil,  headed into the great unknown by herself. Bran names Tyrion Hand, a fitting punishment for all his screw-ups according to the new king.

There’s no doubt this season has been a rushed business. It has failed to do justice to its characters or its actors and fans were bit disappointed about how the story unfolds. However, with some tears and excitement, HBO’s most popular drama comes to its close.
