Shoaib Akhtar ‘concerned’ for Pakistan going to World Cup without Mohammad Amir

Former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar has expressed his ‘concern’ over the exclusion of Mohammad Amir from the 15-man squad announced for World Cup 2019.

“My biggest concern is the pace department.  This squad lacks a leader of the pace attack, leader of the herd who is aggressive and goes out to attack. Hopefully, Amir can be that,” stated Akhtar in a tweet post.

The Rawalpindi Express also pointed out that fast bowlers Hasan Ali and Junaid Khan would then need to take the charge of the bowling department. “In case that doesn't happen, Hassan Ali has to step up and fill that role along with Junaid Khan,” said Akhtar.

However, the record setting speedster was optimistic that Amir could still make into the World Cup, if he performs well in the One Day International series against England, which is schedule to be held prior the tournament.

“I still think Amir could be a lethal weapon to have in English conditions. He has a chance to prove that in the England series and be selected for World Cup by May 23rd.  Good luck Amir, you can do it,” he added.

Despite not making into the 15-members squad, Amir will serve as cover for the World Cup squad and, if required, can be drafted into the side until 23 May without International Cricket Council's permission.
