Weeds growth and outbreak of pest and viral are the primary threats to the standing sugarcane crop in upcountry, the met office has said. The office also warned that the pest and viral attack may also hit other standing crops of the seasons following the recent rains. It asked the farmers to take steps to avoid yield loses. It also said that the stagnant rainwater was expected to affect the cotton crop and urged the famers to evolve a mechanism to pump out the water from their fields and take other necessary steps in this connection.
After crops irrigation, the office said that rainfall and gusty winds normally cause water logging in fields, suggesting farmers to protect crops like maize, sugarcane and cotton from being waterlogged. Farmers of rain-dependent areas obtaining water through tube-wells and the irrigated areas in upper parts of the country should schedule their crops irrigation according to the expected weather. "Farmers are advised to take in time precautionary measures to protect their crops, livestock and other property from any expected heavy rain," it advised.
Mainly hot and dry weather is expected in most parts of the Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Sindh, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan till October 10. However, scattered light to moderate rainfall is expected in Bannu, Kohat and Hazara (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) on October 9 and 10, light to moderate rain in northwest Balochistan including Zhob on October 9.
Light to moderate rain is expected in Gilgit city and Skardu on October 6, 9 and 10. Rain-thunderstorm is expected at Muzaffarabad, Kotli and Rawalakot (Kashmir) on October 9 and 10. Temperatures at night are expected to drop slightly by 1 to 2 degrees and during day just slightly normal in most of the agricultural plains of the country and wind is expected to blow with its normal pattern till October 10.
