Brazil's 2015/16 total cane crush should reach 655.1 million tonnes, little changed from April's projection of 654.6 million tonnes, Brazil's crop forecast agency Conab said on Thursday. Brazil's 2015/16 center-south sugar output was projected at 33.7 million tonnes, unchanged from April. Northeast sugar production was slightly reduced to 3.55 million tonnes versus 3.63 million tonnes previously.
Brazil's center-south ethanol output in 2015/16 is seen at 26.22 billion liters versus 26.9 billion liters in April, Conab said. According to the report, weather was mostly favorable for the crop until now, except for southern areas such as Parana where rains were above normal and delayed harvesting.
"Brazil's cane crop could be even bigger this year if it were not for a reduction on the planted area and due to the cane crop's continued recovery from a drought last year," said Conab. The area for cane planting in Brazil was reduced by around 50,000 hectares this year compared to the previous season. Better climate conditions in most areas will result in more cane per hectare. Yields were projected at an average of 73 tonnes cane per hectare versus 70 tonnes last year.
