A United Nations aid agency has recently bought a total 110,000 tonnes of milling wheat to be shipped to Yemen and also the east African state of Djibouti, European traders said on Monday. The purchase comprised 40,000 tonnes of wheat for Yemen and 70,000 tonnes for Djibouti, they said. The wheat for Yemen can be sourced from either European Union, Ukraine or Russia and is for June 10-25 shipment, they said.
The wheat purchased for Djibouti is all expected to be sourced from the Black Sea region and comprises 40,000 tonnes for July 1-10 shipment and 30,000 tonnes for July 25 to August 10 shipment, they said. The UN has been intensifying food aid to Yemen after conflict broke out in the country and has also made large recent purchases of flour for Yemen, traders said. The UN has a range of food aid programmes underway in east Africa.
