LAHORE: The Punjab Revenue Authority (PRA) has intensified its crackdown on businesses violating the Electronic Invoice Monitoring System (E-IMS), issuing notices to more than 70 hotels, restaurants and marquees across the province over the past two days.
According to a statement issued by the authority on Wednesday, its enforcement teams also imposed fines on several restaurants that continued to violate E-IMS requirements despite receiving notices. The E-IMS system is aimed at improving transparency in business transactions and strengthening monitoring of sales and tax collection. Businesses falling above the prescribed sales threshold are required to issue receipts through the system, while the PRA digitally monitors sales and tax records of integrated businesses.
The PRA said customers must be provided with computerised and verifiable receipts after making payments, adding that action was being taken against establishments failing to issue proper sales invoices. The authority said E-IMS would enable it to compare the business volumes declared in tax returns with actual tax collection records, helping identify discrepancies and improve tax compliance.
It warned that businesses continuing to violate the system despite notices would face legal action. A PRA spokesperson said protecting the tax paid by consumers was the authority’s top priority and that heavy penalties were being imposed on those involved in fraudulent practices.
