PSX extends recovery

KARACHI: The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) extended its recovery on Wednesday as selective buying in commercial banks, cement and fertilizer stocks supported the market, lifting the market.

The benchmark KSE-100 Index gained by 368.92 points, or 0.22 percent, to 169,969.33 points, just below the 170,000-point level at the close, against the previous close of 169,600.41 points. The index crossed the 170,000-point level during the session, reaching an intraday high of 171,492.53 points, before retreating to an intraday low of 169,872.14 points and settling below the threshold at the close.

Business Recorder’s sectoral indices reflected the selective strength across major market segments. The BRIndex100 closed at 18,741.70 points, up 66.62 points, or 0.36 percent, from the previous close of 18,675.08 points, with a total volume of 461.435 million shares. The BRIndex30, however, declined by 90.54 points, or 0.13 percent, to close at 67,732.60 points against 67,823.14 points, with total volume of 258.587 million shares.

According to Mubashir Anis Naviwala of JS Global, buying interest emerged at the PSX as the index traded in a narrow band, with commercial banks, fertilizer and cement stocks providing support, while pressure was seen across food and personal care, power generation and chemical sectors. He said the session ended on a mildly positive note as buying interest helped the index move closer to the 170,000-point level.

Ready-market turnover increased to 591.235 million shares from 568.040 million shares on Tuesday, representing an increase of 23.195 million shares, or 4.08 percent. However, traded value declined to Rs 20.192 billion from Rs.20.813 billion, down Rs 0.621 billion, or 2.98 percent.

Total market capitalisation increased by Rs 37.573 billion to Rs 18.928 trillion from Rs 18.890 trillion in the previous session. Market breadth remained positive, with 253 companies advancing, 195 declining and 47 remaining unchanged out of 495 active issues.

Pakistan International Bulk Terminal (Pak Int Bulk) led ready-market volumes with 73.447 million shares. The stock closed at Rs 14.68 against Rs 14.57. Kohinoor Spinning followed with 58.387 million shares, settled at Rs 5.73 compared to Rs4 96. Tasdeeq Information recorded 50.883 million shares. It ended the day at Rs5.13 against Rs5.22 Monday.

In ready-market price movements, Unilever Pakistan Foods Limited recorded the largest gain, surging by Rs 199.00 to close at Rs 25,534.00, followed by Sapphire Textile Mills Limited, which gained Rs 43.81 to settle at Rs 1,521.05. On the declining side, PIA Holding Company Limited (B) posted the largest fall, dropping Rs 237.49 to close at Rs 15,262.51, while Nestle Pakistan Limited fell Rs 202.29 to end at Rs 7,156.59.

The BR Automobile Assembler Index gained 41.43 points, or 0.19 percent, to 22,431.65 points, with turnover of 1.183 million shares. The BR Cement Index rose 73.31 points, or 0.63 percent, to 11,785.90 points on turnover of 20.635 million shares.

The BR Commercial Banks Index increased by 296.17 points, or 0.51 percent, to 58,824.77 points, with 18.489 million shares changing hands.

The BR Power Generation and Distribution Index declined by 119.35 points, or 0.47 percent, to 25,522.39 points, with turnover of 32.224 million shares.

The BR Oil and Gas Index edged up 5.11 points, or 0.03 percent, to 14,964.00 points on turnover of 25.027 million shares, while the BR Tech & Comm Index gained 0.29 points, or 0.01 percent, to 3,322.34 points, with total turnover of 52.512 million shares.

Market participants are expected to monitor corporate earnings announcements, macroeconomic indicators and international energy-market developments, pointing continued range-bound and stock-specific trading.
