ISLAMABAD: The federal government on Wednesday stepped up efforts to fast-track wheat imports, directing the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) to proceed with procurement of the remaining 185,000 tonnes required by Sindh for Food Year 2026-27.
The decision was taken at the seventh meeting of the Steering Committee on Wheat Imports for Food Year 2026-27, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
The committee reviewed progress on wheat import arrangements and directed the TCP to accept the lowest bid or bids for procurement of the remaining quantity required by Sindh.

Dar also directed the governments of Punjab, Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to promptly arrange the required payments and complete tripartite agreements with the TCP to ensure timely execution of the import process.
According to the government, the imports are intended to ensure adequate wheat supplies and keep prices at reasonable levels, providing relief to consumers.
The meeting was attended by the Minister for National Food Security and Research, Sindh’s food minister, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Bajwa, Secretary Commerce, Managing Director of the Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (PASSCO), relevant provincial secretaries, and senior officials from the Ministry of National Food Security and Research and the TCP.
The committee’s directives come as the government moves to complete arrangements for wheat imports for the 2026-27 food year, with the focus on meeting provincial requirements and ensuring timely procurement and supply.
