ISLAMABAD: The Large Taxpayer Unit (LTU) Multan of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has detected alleged sales tax evasion amounting to around Rs 200 million during scrutiny of records seized from a registered factory of Multan.

According to FBR sources, the tax liability surfaced during detailed scrutiny of sales, purchase and tax records, computer data and other documents seized during a search operation carried out at the industrial unit under a search warrant.

The FBR team, accompanied by a heavy police contingent, had conducted the search and inspected the stock available at the factory besides taking into custody relevant business records and computer data for detailed examination and reconciliation with tax returns and declared transactions.

Sources said that the scrutiny subsequently revealed alleged sales tax evasion of approximately Rs 200 million. Following the identification of the tax liability, the factory management has deposited more than Rs 70 million with the FBR, while security cheques amounting to over Rs 130 million have been submitted to the tax authorities against the remaining amount.

The management has also assured the FBR authorities that the outstanding amount would be paid in instalments over an agreed period, sources added.

The FBR officials described the development as a significant achievement in the department’s efforts to curb tax evasion and protect government revenue. They said the action was initiated after the LTU received information regarding alleged irregularities in payment of sales tax by the industrial unit.

The officials said scrutiny of the seized record was still being carried out and the final position regarding the tax liability would be determined after completion of the investigation and verification process.

The LTU Multan has also intensified scrutiny of tax affairs of various industrial units in the region, with officials stating that action is being taken against entities allegedly causing losses to the national exchequer through tax evasion or other irregularities.
