KARACHI: Trading activity at the Pakistan Stock Exchange’s futures counter weakened during the week ended July 17, mirroring the broader bearish trend in the equity market as heightened geopolitical tensions and cautious investor sentiment reduced participation in leveraged positions.

According to the weekly market report, the futures spread narrowed by 167 basis points to 9.11 percent, compared with 10.78 percent in the previous week, indicating a contraction in the premium between futures and spot prices amid increased market uncertainty.

Average Daily Turnover (ADTO) in the futures market declined 17.0 percent to 170.78 million shares, down from 205.78 million shares recorded a week earlier. Likewise, the average daily traded value fell 18.0 percent to Rs8.09 billion, compared with Rs9.87 billion in the preceding week.

Market analysts said the decline in futures volumes and the narrowing spread reflected a cautious approach by investors, who preferred to reduce leveraged positions amid heightened volatility and uncertainty in the equity market.
