Illegally battery-burning operators: Hyderabad traders laud launch of crackdown
HYDERABAD: Hyderabad SITE Association of Trade and Industry Acting Chairman Aamir Shahab welcomed the action taken by the Hyderabad Regional Office of Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) against the elements that illegally burn used batteries to extract lead and pollute the environment and said that such effective steps are indispensable for the protection of human lives, environment and future generations.
He said that the process of illegally extracting lead from used batteries is extremely dangerous not only for the environment but also for human health. It pollutes the air, soil and groundwater, while toxic metals have extremely harmful effects on the health of children, the elderly and ordinary citizens. Such illegal businesses do not deserve any concession and strict action should be taken against them as per the law.
Aamir Shahab said that the recent action of SEPA is commendable, however, this problem is not limited to a few places but violations of environmental laws are also ongoing in different areas of the city.
He demanded that SEPA, district administration and relevant agencies should crack down on an indiscriminate and permanent basis across the city under a joint strategy so that illegal battery recycling units, factories emitting toxic fumes, elements illegally disposing of hazardous waste, open burning of garbage and tires, discharging contaminated industrial waste into drains and all other activities that harm the environment can be completely eradicated.
