LAHORE: Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved the provision of new electric buses for 10 additional districts of the province, including Attock, Bhakkar, Hafizabad, Khanewal, Layyah, Sheikhupura, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Mandi Bahauddin and Okara.

Chairing a special meeting, the chief minister reviewed progress on mass transit system projects in Gujranwala and Faisalabad, and directed that construction and rehabilitation of metro bus stations be completed at the earliest. She also approved new design proposals for the stations.

The meeting was informed that more than 125,000 passengers had benefited from 21 routes under the free transport initiative, while 3,560 bus trips had been completed so far.

Officials briefed the participants of the meeting that 100 electric buses would arrive in Punjab during the current month, 350 by mid-May and a further 264 by the end of June.

It was decided to establish dedicated depots for electric buses in every division across the province. The Chief Minister also sought a comprehensive plan to operate 1,500 electric buses at the tehsil level.
