ISLAMABAD: At least three civilians, including two children, were killed and three more critically injured after Afghan Taliban forces allegedly carried out unprovoked shelling on a residential area in Bajaur, in what security sources described as a serious escalation along the Pakistan–Afghanistan border.
According to security officials, the incident occurred in the border village of Malik Shaheen in the Kat Kot area, where mortar fire struck a civilian house, resulting in the deaths of a woman and two children from the same family. The injured were shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Security sources said the attack followed recent attempts by Afghan Taliban elements to facilitate the infiltration of militants belonging to Fitna al Khawarij into Pakistani territory. These infiltration attempts, they added, were foiled by timely action of Pakistani security forces.
“After failing to push militants across the border, Afghan Taliban targeted civilian population in frustration,” a security official said, terming the shelling a deliberate act against non-combatants.
In response, Pakistani forces carried out immediate retaliatory strikes, destroying the firing positions used from across the border. Officials further stated that multiple Afghan Taliban posts adjacent to Bajaur were engaged, resulting in significant casualties on the Afghan side.
