‘Austerity measures’: govt calls off Pakistan Day parade, associated events

The government on Tuesday called off the annual Pakistan Day parade and related events scheduled for March 23, citing austerity measures amid the ongoing Gulf oil crisis.

“In the backdrop of the ongoing Gulf oil crisis and the consequent austerity measures announced by the government, it has been decided that the Pakistan Day Parade and associated ceremonial events shall not be held on 23rd March 2026,” the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said in a statement.

“The day shall, however, be commemorated with dignity and reverence through a simple flag‑hoisting ceremony at appropriate levels. This measure is being taken to ensure that the resilience and unwavering commitment of the nation to the ideals of Pakistan Day remain aligned with the broader austerity framework.

“Ministries, divisions, and departments are advised to mark the occasion in a solemn and respectful manner, ensuring that the essence of the day is preserved despite the scaled‑down celebrations,” it added.

Last week, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced sweeping austerity and energy conservation measures, including a four-day workweek for government offices, as Pakistan braces for the potential economic impact of the ongoing Middle East conflict.

Addressing the nation, the premier said government offices would operate only four days a week, with one additional weekly holiday introduced as part of fuel conservation efforts.

Later, the government also announced to utilise funds generated from austerity measures for public relief amid escalating tensions in the region.

It was decided that, similar to government employees, there would be a 5-30% reduction in the salaries of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) employees and autonomous institutions operating under government patronage. The cuts will be used for public relief initiatives, as per the government.
