KARACHI: A fire that broke out Monday morning at the Karachi International Container Terminal (KICT) was swiftly prevented from escalating into a major industrial incident at one of Pakistan’s busiest port facilities.
According to KPT, the fire originated inside a 40-foot container loaded on a top-lifter vehicle before spreading to adjacent containers in the yard.
The alarm was raised at 10:26 AM, prompting an immediate emergency response — one fire tender was dispatched from the MI Yard and two additional units were mobilized from the central fire station.
Following the swift and coordinated response by KPT’s firefighting teams, the blaze was brought under control in less than 20 minutes and fully extinguished by 11:00 AM — a response-to-containment time of less than 35 minutes from the moment the incident was reported, KPT said.
KPT also commended the critical support extended by Karachi Shipyard and Pakistan Navy, whose fire tenders participated actively in the operation.
No casualties have been reported, and port operations are expected to return to normal without significant disruption, KPT added.
Meanwhile, KICT officials confirmed the fire broke out Monday morning in an empty container and spread to 3 more empty containers. They said that the fire was brought under control within minutes, adding that no goods were damaged in the incident.
