KARACHI: Leadership of Pasban Democratic Party (PDP) has demanded that an impartial fire safety audit of all commercial plazas and high-rise buildings in Karachi should be conducted.
They said that justice does not come from reports, justice comes only through action.
The fire in Gul Plaza turned into a major human tragedy due to the absence of safety arrangements, poor building control, illegal mezzanine floor and the criminal negligence of the Sindh government. Just saying that the fire was started by a child is an open attempt to save the real culprits.
PDP Karachi President Abdul Hakim Quaid has given a strong and categorical response to the investigation report of the Gul Plaza fire and said that the courts and government offices have already become warehouses of reports; the public does not want more reports but practical justice and immediate action against those responsible. The Sindh government has once again maintained the tradition of saving the real criminals by giving the public the lollipop of paper reports.
The Sindh government and the Commissioner Karachi should stop fooling the public. Even after the loss of more than 80 precious human lives, the Sindh government has nothing but show-off operations and files.
Abdul Hakim Quaid expressed these views while talking to the Pasban leaders and workers during his visit to Jamia Masjid Bihar Colony, Lyari.
Vice Chairman Azam Minhas, Pasban leaders Amjad Baloch, Javed Iqbal, Akram Agria, Imdad Hussain, Fazal Rabi, Usman Awan, Rashid Khan, Sohail Khan, Yousaf Baloch and others were also present on the occasion.
The Pasban leaders expressed grief over the heavy loss of life and property in Gul Plaza and prayed for the forgiveness of the deceased.
The real culprits are the institutions that turned a blind eye to illegal constructions, poor fire safety and blatant violations of building control.
If there were fire alarms, emergency exits, sprinklers and safety arrangements in Gul Plaza, the lights of hundreds of houses would not have gone out like this. But the incompetence of the Sindh government, Sindh Building Control Authority and the district administration turned this building into a well of death.
PDP leaders strongly demanded that criminal cases be initiated against the builders, owners and concerned government officials responsible for the Gul Plaza tragedy.
The families of the deceased should be given full financial compensation in due course.
