PESHAWAR: Additional 52 diesel hybrid buses will be inducted into the fleet of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service at a cost of Rs 3.2 billion, while 50 electric buses will also be added at a cost of Rs 6.2 billion. These new buses will be inducted in the fleet by June 2026.
This was told during a meeting on the proposed extension of BRT network held here on Tuesday with Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi in the chair.
Besides, Chief Secretary Shahab Ali Shah, Additional Chief Secretary Planning and Development Ikramullah and Secretary Transport, other relevant officials also attended the meeting.On this occasion, the Chief Minister directed the relevant authorities to complete all preparatory work at the earliest for the extension of the Bus Rapid Transit service to Tehsil Jamrud and Tehsil Bara in District Khyber. He said that the expansion of the BRT network would significantly ease commuting between Peshawar and Khyber district, while providing residents with a safe, reliable and affordable public transport facility.
He added that the extension would also contribute to reducing traffic congestion and environmental pollution. During the meeting, it was decided to construct a dedicated ramp at Karkhano Station for the BRT service at an estimated cost of Rs 500 million.
Officials briefed the meeting on infrastructure requirements, fleet expansion and operational arrangements for the new routes. It was informed that 12 new 12-meter buses would be procured to initiate BRT operations for Jamrud and Bara bazaars.
Eight bus stops will be established along five-kilometre stretch from Karhano Market to Jamrud Bazaar, while ten bus stops will be set up over a seven-kilometre stretch from Pishtakhara to Bara Bazaar.
The meeting was also informed that the BRT system currently operates 18 routes covering a total distance of 132 kilometres.
