KARACHI: Minority Forum Pakistan convened a seminar here on Friday, urging strengthened constitutional protections and the promotion of equal citizenship for minority communities.
In his opening remarks, Nasir William, Convener MFP, underscored the relevance of the recent Sindh Assembly resolution passed on National Minority Day.
He emphasized the need for mainstream political parties to honour their commitments and advance meaningful reforms for minority rights.
MPA Mahesh Kumar Hasija outlined the core elements of the resolution, including the protection of worship places and cultural heritage, measures to prevent forced conversions, enforcement of Article 22-A within educational institutions, and the inclusion of Quaid-e-Azam’s 11 August speech at the primary education level to promote constitutional values and pluralism.
Peter Jacob, Executive Director CSJ, highlighted the urgent need for stronger institutional mechanisms, accessible legal aid, and comprehensive policy reforms. He noted that Pakistan’s challenge is not over-legislation but inadequate implementation, adding that certain discriminatory provisions within the constitution require amendment to ensure full equality for all citizens
Participants unanimously supported the immediate enforcement of Article 22-A and called for reinforced protections to safeguard minority rights across Sindh and the country.
