ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday called on the nation to foster a culture of patience and tolerance, highlighting the teachings of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as a crucial foundation for promoting national harmony.

Speaking at a ceremony marking International Tolerance Day, he reaffirmed that tolerance and coexistence were central to the creation of Pakistan, values that everyone must continue to uphold.

“The example of the Prophet (PBUH) is a great treasure for us,” he said. “The struggle for independence involved not only Muslims but also people from all walks of life, including minorities.”

He referenced a historic speech by Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah on August 11, 1947, in which Jinnah envisioned a nation where people of all religions could coexist peacefully and enjoy religious freedom.

PM Sharif stressed that upholding these values would be essential for Pakistan’s future success. He also highlighted the lessons from the life of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), particularly the incident at Taif, where the Holy Prophet (PBUH) faced intense opposition and was pelted with stones. “The Holy Prophet’s (PBUH) response to these provocations, his commitment to tolerance, and his focus on peace, remain timeless lessons for humanity.”

He underscored that the teachings of Islam, along with those of other faiths such as Christianity, emphasise peace, brotherhood, and mutual respect. “If we nurture these values in our society, Pakistan can once again rise to its true potential as a nation where all citizens, regardless of their faith or background, can live in peace and prosperity.”

The Minister for Law, Azam Nazir Tarar, also addressed the gathering, calling for collective efforts to promote tolerance at both the social and economic levels. “The example of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) should serve as a guiding light for all of us,” he said. “By overcoming intolerance, we can bring about positive change in our society.”

Kamran Michael, a former senator from a minority community, expressed optimism about Pakistan’s future, urging the nation to prioritize unity and reject negativity. He also commended Prime Minister Sharif for steering the country toward a more progressive direction.

Amna Leila Azhar, Chairperson of the National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW), reminded the audience that the day serves as a reminder of the importance of peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.

The event also showcased a video message from Dr Samuel Rizk, the UNDP Resident Representative in Pakistan, adding a global touch to the proceedings.

Meanwhile, singer Arieb Azhar captivated the audience with a soul-stirring Sufi performance, weaving melodies that resonated with the day’s themes of unity and peace.

The ceremony concluded with a collective pledge to uphold the values of tolerance and understanding, reinforcing the commitment to build a society where all citizens, regardless of their beliefs, can live together in harmony.
