KARACHI: COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI), a world-ranked public sector university under the Ministry of Science and Technology with seven campuses nationwide, has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Benazir Bhutto Shaheed University Lyari (BBSUL), Karachi.

The signing ceremony took place on Friday at BBSUL’s Main Campus in Karachi in the presence of esteemed dignitaries. Nadir Nabil Gabol, spokesperson for the Government of Sindh, graced the occasion as chief guest.

The CUI delegation was led by Prof Dr Sajid Qamar, Rector, accompanied by Prof Dr Shamsul Qamar, Registrar; Muhammad Azam, Treasurer; and Naveed A Khan, General Manager.

From BBSUL, Prof Dr Hussain Mehdi, Vice Chancellor, was joined by Dr Raza Haider Nadeem, Registrar, and Dr Mazhar Ali, Chairman CS&IT Department, who also served as the Focal Person for the ceremony.

Addressing the gathering, Nadir Gabol reaffirmed the Sindh government’s commitment to providing world-class facilities for the youth of Lyari. He expressed confidence that this collaboration would open new avenues for faculty development, student mobility, and research exchange. He further emphasised Karachi’s role as a hub of entrepreneurial activity, envisioning that this partnership would empower youth with opportunities for academic advancement and professional growth.

Gabol further highlighted the significance of this MoU as a milestone collaboration between two leading public sector universities. He noted that BBSUL, known for its strength in Sports Science, would share its expertise with CUI, while benefiting from CUI’s strong research capacity and international collaborations.

Under the agreement, both universities committed to wide-ranging cooperation in academic development, research and innovation, faculty and student exchange, training and capacity building, as well as entrepreneurship and industry linkages. The MoU will also promote cultural exchange and sports collaboration, including athlete development programmes, specialised camps and tournaments that draw upon Lyari’s rich sporting legacy. Specialised training in fields such as artificial intelligence, data science, research methodologies, and academic writing will also be facilitated to strengthen teaching and learning practices.

The MoU, valid for five years, sets the foundation for long-term cooperation, institutional strengthening, and shared contributions to Pakistan’s knowledge economy.
